This weekend the Newnan-Coweta County Airport in Newnan, Ga., was renamed Whitlock Field for one of the four airmen killed in last year’s U-28A crash in Djibouti.
Capt. Nick Whitlock was the co-captain of the U-28A that crashed Feb. 18, 2012. Also killed were Capt. Ryan P. Hall, 1st Lt. Justin J. Wilkens and Senior Airman Julian S. Scholten.
During a ceremony yesterday, Whitlock’s family and friends remembered the captain, according to the Bowling Green Daily News.
“For those who knew Nick well, you will all agree that his charming demeanor and his gregarious personality made him very easy to befriend and get close to,” said Air Force Capt. Joshua Stinson, according to the Daily News. “Nick and I started our training on the U-28 (aircraft), and early on I always remember hearing his unique, vivacious laugh down the hall and how he was always able to light up the classroom whenever he entered.”
“If we live our lives as the best people that we can be, and encourage people to be the best that they can be … we’d have a lot better world than we live in now,” said Nick’s brother James Whitlock said.
The small airport sits about 33 miles south of Atlanta and serves about 70 flights per day.
