There is nothing cool about losing a $30 million aircraft. But a couple good things did come from the F-15 crash near Nellis Air Force Base, Nev., in October: the pilot ejected without injury and Airman 1st Class Daniel Hughes managed to snap some nifty photos of the cleanup process. If you’ve served abroad, Uncle Sam wants your photographs. The Defense Department wants donated photos from current and former service members who have served overseas for use in a recognition exhibition planned in conjunction with the State Department, according to a DoD press release. The department is looking for photos that depict life as a military member overseas in six specific categories: daily life, friendship, places, faces, loss or triumph. If your picture is chosen, it will be used for display in a special photography exhibition planned for the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Pentagon and other prominent venues, stateside and…

Keesler Air Force Base, Miss., has had a full-on cat drama this week, according to an Air Force News story. Brig. Gen. (Dr.) Kory Cornum, 81st Medical Group commander, parked his staff car by the hospital while he was on TDY, only to have it become the de facto residence of a family of cats: momma and her kittens. The cat family was noticed by a staff member who saw one of the kittens staring at him from the grill of the general’s car as he reported work. The staff called pest control to round up the kittens — momma…
Who needs the 4th of July fireworks show when you can get these kind of pyrotechnics on a regular basis if you join the U.S. Air Force? On this day in 1954, the C-130 Hercules flew for the first time and more than 50 years later, the bird still flies every day in support of the Air Force mission. It goes to show that just because something is old, doesn’t mean it can’t still get the job done. The current iteration of Lockheed Martin’s C-130 is 112 feet long and has a 132-foot wingspan. It can fly in excess of…
