MacDill Air Force Base in Florida would like to remind it’s airmen to leave the drones for Creech. In a post to the base’s website and Facebook pages, it reminded troops that small personal drones that are commercially available are illegal to fly on base grounds. “Are you thinking of buying a drone for the holidays?  You may want to rethink this gift idea,” the post said. “As drones increase in popularity and decrease in price, it may be tempting to purchase a drone as a gift for the holiday season. While it may be fun to own a drone,…

The Air Force Band yesterday staged its annual surprise performance of holiday music at Union Station in Washington DC on Thursday. Unlike previous years, which were more classically-themed flash mob-style performances, this year’s show nodded to the Air Force’s roots and the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II. The musicians wore Army Air Corps uniforms and played a period-appropriate big band-style arrangement of Jingle Bells — even bringing strings into the mix — before segueing to a choral version of Auld Lang Syne. Swing dancers from New York City helped bring everything home, and Air Force Secretary Deborah Lee James…

This may be the most ironic official Air Force photograph of all time: Maj. Gen. James Post — who was fired from his old job earlier this year for telling officers they would be “committing treason” if they advocated to lawmakers for keeping the A-10 Thunderbolt in service — face-to-face with a Warthog. Pacific Air Forces recently posted the photograph of Post, taken during his Nov. 12 visit to Osan Air Base in South Korea, late Tuesday night. It did not go unnoticed by military observers — especially Warthog fans who raked Post over the coals for his treason comments earlier this…

The Air Force’s official blog posted a Top 10 list of myths about Remotely Piloted Aircraft that included a reassurance that RPA technology is not extraterrestrial in origin. “Myth: RPAs are made from alien technology and are flown from area 51. Fact: The U.S. Air Force actually has a long history of unmanned flight and we are still learning new and better ways to fly. We will continue to improve our methods of training, conducting operations and employing new weapon systems,” the blog post reads, adding that Creech Air Force Base in Nevada is the main site of RPA operations, with…

Funnyman Conan O’Brien and First Lady Michelle Obama put on a show for troops stationed at Al Udeid Air Base yesterday. And judging by this short clip of Conan’s stand-up set — apparently taken by someone in the crowd and sent to John Q. Public blogger Tony Carr, who posted it on his YouTube channel — he left the troops howling with laughter. In his gut-bustingly hilarious rant, Conan eviscerates the base’s restrictions on consuming alcohol and suggests a few tweaks to the military’s policy that seemed … let’s call it warmly received by the crowd. Portions of Conan’s trip will be…

Troops at Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar are getting an unusual guest this week: Talk show host and comedian Conan O’Brien. Conan landed at Al Udeid today with First Lady Michelle Obama. During his visit, O’Brien will be putting on a show for some of the roughly 11,000 service members stationed there. Portions of Conan’s trip to Doha will be shown on his late-night TBS show later this year, according to Entertainment Weekly. But in the meantime, he’s taken the reins of the First Lady’s Instagram account and is promising to post more photos showing his trip. Said O’Brien: Hi everyone! It’s…

A group of aviation enthusiasts is trying to restore a B-29 Superfortress to working order, and has set up a Kickstarter campaign for donations. The non-profit group Doc’s Friends is trying to raise funds to restore the 1945 B-29 known as “Doc,” named for one of the dwarves in Walt Disney’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, the group’s website says. “After spending 42 years deteriorating in the western Mojave Desert at the U.S. Naval Weapons Testing Center, B-29 Doc was rescued in 1998 by Tony Mazzolini and an intrepid group of volunteers,” the group’s Kickstarter page says. “Despite initial…

Walking the floor at Comic-Con, you’re bound to see people pretending to be Darth Vader, Captain America, Batman or Daenerys Targaryen from Game of Thrones. What you don’t expect to run into is someone pretending to be an Air Force Office of Special Investigations special agent. But that’s exactly what a federal indictment alleges airman Jonathon Wall did last month at the Salt Lake City Comic-Con. The Justice Department yesterday announced that Wall, 29, of Layton, Utah, was indicted by a federal grand jury on Wednesday on one count of pretending to be a federal officer, which could carry a jail…

October is almost here, and that means it’s time for the Air Force Academy’s Falcons to square off against the Naval Academy’s Midshipmen. It also means that it’s time for the usual inter-service rivalry to flare up, and Annapolis has delivered a doozy. Naval Academy cadet Rylan Tuohy has directed a video called “Air Force Training at Navy,” which was posted on YouTube Sunday. The mock training film purports to take a “recently declassified” look inside the Air Force Transition to Navy Environment program. But in a riff on the “Chair Force” stereotype, the supposed Air Force cadets prove to be incapable…
