DOD: Report of 3,000 U.S. troops in Iraq ‘absolutely false’

The Defense Department has rebuffed an Iranian state-media report that the U.S. has sent 3,000 troops to Iraq in response to the civil war in Syria.

The story, which ran in Iran’s Press TV, was picked up by the Drudge Report, a widely read website in the U.S.

“This reporting is absolutely false,” said Air Force Lt. Col. Jack Miller, a spokesman for the Defense Department.”U.S. military assigned in Iraq are at about 200 and have been so since December 2011 and they are assigned to the Embassy in Iraq. Press TV is a propaganda arm of the Iran government and has a history of publishing false reports.”
