Austere assignments with the Guard — this week's Air Force Times

As thousands of active-duty, Guard and Reserve airmen are being intermixed at bases, active-duty airmen are finding themselves living in spartan conditions on Guard installations that lack on-base housing, healthcare and other services.

Read about how the Air Force is tackling the challenge through community basing, which is meant to make sure that such services are either on base or nearby for active-duty airmen stationed in remote locations.

Also in this week’s edition: Congress wants Defense Secretary Leon Panetta to give lawmakers a report on all of the investigations launched into the mishandling of fallen troops’ remains at Dover Air Force Base, Del.

In late 2011, the Air Force confirmed allegations of “gross mismanagement” at the Dover mortuary. Three top mortuary officials were ultimately disciplined.

You can also read in this week’s newspaper about how the Air Force has opened a new $4.2 million training center for security forces airmen tasked with safeguarding the nation’s nuclear arsenal.

Until recently, the security forces had been training at a post that offered small buildings from the 1930s and 1940s.

And the Air Force has ordered a pair of robot systems that use lasers to strip paint from C-130 cargo planes and F-16 fighters. The systems, which are expected to go into full use at Hill Air Force Base, Utah, in late 2014, reduce health hazards and pollutants that contractors now face when doing the work.
