Lt. Gen. Michelle Johnson made history yesterday when she became the first female superintendent of the Air Force Academy in Colorado. In her remarks at the Aug. 12 change of command ceremony, Johnson said the academy must continue to adapt to keep up with current developments and challenges. “I have a lot of listening to do, a lot of learning to do, to understand how things are now to better help us go forward together,” said Johnson, the academy’s 19th superintendent. “I also know we’ll inevitably face challenges. It won’t be easy, but we can find meaning in adversity, and…
If the Academy isn’t on the “sober” list, or the “party” list, where is it? The Princeton Review released its 2014 edition of “The Best 378 Colleges” book Monday, which includes the lists of the Top 20 party schools and the Top 20 sober schools. But unlike last year’s list, the Air Force Academy doesn’t pop up under the Top 20 sober schools like its military counterparts: the U.S. Military Academy at No. 5, the U.S. Coast Guard Academy at No. 8, and the U.S. Naval Academy at No. 9. Compare the lists from this year and last year below:

There’s a lot to admire during the Warrior Games. And each participating military member has a story to tell. For Air Force Staff Sgt. Lara Ishikawa, participating in the games is something she never thought she’d do. Ishikawa found herself part of a trio of female Air Force Warrior Games athletes along with Tech. Sgt. Monica Figueroa and Master Sgt. Sherry Nel. The three women are all cancer survivors and relied on each other during the team’s selection camp at the Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs, Colo. “Nobody expects to get cancer,” she said in an Air Force press release.…
Taking our “Here’s Why” from the paper to the blog. An explanation for why something is the way it is in the Air Force/military. If you’ve ever been a cadet at the Air Force Academy, or just an attendee at an Academy football game, you’ve probably heard the Falcon Fight song: Fly ye Falcons down the field; Tear the enemy asunder! Bare your talons, make them yield; Give them all your thunder! Spread your strong wings high and wide; Fight for victory! Never say die, keep flying high For your Air Force Academy! This all had to do with retired…
The military justice system gives a commander the power to nullify the verdict of a military jury, as is the case with a former inspector general whose conviction for sex assault was tossed by a three-star general. In this week’s edition, Air Force Times explains how much power the convening authority has and how often clemency is granted in sex assault convictions. In other news, the Air Force has adopted a new test for synthetic marijuana, known as “spice,” that detects the substance six to eight weeks after it was ingested. You can read how an Air Force Academy cadet…

The Air Force Academy’s men’s basketball team broke out some seldom-used uniforms last night for the team’s 71-56 win over UNLV. Here, guard Michael Lyons goes up for a layup during the first half. The Falcons are 15-8, 6-4 in the Mountain West Division so far. No word on if the uniforms are the new light weight ABUs, or if those haven’t yet made it to Colorado Springs.
