In a column published in USA Today, a former judge advocate argues the Air Force has a double standard when it comes to expressing viewpoints contrary to the service’s own. Support the Air Force’s official stance, former Capt. Maribel Jarzabek writes, and get rewarded. Oppose it, she says, and get punished. Jarzabek gives as examples a two-star general’s recent alleged characterization as “treasonous” any officers who would work with lawmakers against the Air Force’s contentious plan to retire the A-10 — as well as her own case. Jarzabek told Air Force Times in December she was investigated and ultimately verbally counseled…

Looking to 2014, airmen can expect further force cuts, changes to how they are evaluated and new opportunities in career fields such as cyber security. This week’s Air Force Times lays out the 15 things airmen need to know about what to expect in the coming year. One thing airmen should definitely expect is the Air Force to continue to get smaller under budget pressure next year. Toward that end, airmen will be told Jan. 6 if they will be considered by the service’s first Quality Force Review, which will look at separating subpar enlisted airmen. You can read more…

In his latest Airman to Airman video, Chief of Staff Gen. Mark Welsh takes what could be his toughest stance yet on sexual assault and harassment in the ranks. “I think it’s time we just looked ourselves in the mirror and were honest about this,” Welsh says in the two-minute video posted on the Air Force website. The message is somewhat reminiscent of a June 13 video by Australian Lt. Gen. David Morrison posted to YouTube over what the army chief called “highly inappropriate material demeaning to women” circulated by a group of army officers. In the Dec. 19 Air Force…
The Air Force has announced steep cuts to re-enlistment bonuses and retraining opportunities as budget cuts force the service to get smaller. In this week’s Air Force Times, we explain who is getting a re-enlistment bonus and who isn’t as well as which career fields are no longer on the retraining list. In the next few weeks, even more bad news may be coming. Also this week: the Air Force recently selected about 1,000 staff sergeants for special duties out of an eligibility pool of roughly 7,500 nominees. You can read the five things you need to know about special…

The latest episode of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, “Military Justice,” takes on corruption within the chain of command and sexual assault in the military. Not to mention, toward the end of the episode, viewers see the prosecution reference a pamphlet asking the “victim to submit” rather than fight back. Sound familiar? In late June, a sexual assault prevention brochure at Shaw Air Force Base, S.C., was yanked after a lawmaker objected to advice that victims submit to an attack rather than resist. “If you are attacked, it may be advisable to submit than to resist,” the brochure said.…
Seventy airmen and soldiers went to work at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska, last week acting out of character — late to duty, withdrawn — and appearing injured — black eyes, bruised faces. Then they waited to see what would happen. It was part of a social experiment devised by the Army and Air Force Family Advocacy offices at Elmendorf for Domestic Violence Awareness Month. What they wanted to know: Would their colleagues intervene or look the other way? And if they looked the other way, why? The “injured” service members, which included both enlisted members and officers, were prepared for…
Many victims of sexual assault are afraid of retaliation if they come forward. While retaliation can be hard to prove, it is a very real risk. Air Force Times talked to three airmen who reported sexual assault and harassment and suffered the consequences. Also in this week’s edition: The partial shutdown of the federal government has hit the Air Force’s training and education programs. You can read which programs have been delayed and which have been stood down. The shutdown has promoted the Air Force to ground fighter squadrons for a second time in a year. The back-to-back stand downs…
