Chief of Staff Gen. Mark Welsh is reminding airmen this holiday season in a somber – but realistic – message that Air Force casualties affect everyone, and the need to take care of one another has never been greater. In his latest “Airman to Airman” video, Welsh emphasizes the need to stay safe this holiday season by showing a rolodex – one of four on his desk – that holds the names of every airman who’s died since he became chief. “I’ve been the chief for 820 days now, and there are about 818 names in these boxes, so we…

Well color us jealous.  Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Mark Welsh and wife, Betty, met the virtuoso of late night TV yesterday, and Jimmy Fallon and crew seem like they all had a good time. “@BettyWelsh20 and I had a great time at the Tonight Show w/ @jimmyfallon…What a gracious & hilarious host!” Welsh tweeted from his official twitter page. They also met Dolly Parton, Fallon’s guest star of the night. “Pretty cool to thank @DollyParton for a lifetime of giving & watch her rock the stage. My fav…’The Sweetest Gift’,” Welsh later tweeted. ORLANDO — Mustache March is right around the corner. And this year, Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Mark Welsh is issuing a challenge to the entire service. “I don’t think we’ve ever had an all-in Mustache March, have we?” Welsh said during his Feb. 20 address to the Air Force Association’s Air Warfare Symposium. “I’m putting the smackdown on you guys. Air Force-wide Mustache March, MAJCOM competitions.” Welsh prefaced his challenge by showing two humorously-doctored photos of himself — one with a regular mustache and another with an outrageously drooping ‘stache. But airmen shouldn’t even dream of using such…

In his latest “Airman to Airman” video, Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Mark Welsh urged airmen to remain focused on their mission even in the face of trying times and scandal. Welsh referred obliquely to the widening scandal involving cheating missileers, but sought to buck up the spirits of the force. “The last couple of times I’ve talked to you, we’ve been talking about issues that are pretty uncomfortable,” Welsh said in the Feb. 3 video. “Things that we’re struggling a little bit in our Air Force. We’ve just added another one to the plate with some people who…

When you’re a kid, complaining of boredom usually gets you more chores to do around the house. But when you’re serving in an Air Force that is facing deep budget-driven cuts to its flying hours, boredom complaints may be a sign of serious morale and looming retention problems. As we reported, Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Mark Welsh last week raised the specter of bored pilots and flight crews while testifying before the Senate Armed Services Committee: The flying reductions are starting to affect the Air Force’s morale in worrying ways, Welsh said. He said he recently spoke to…

Lt. Gen. Michelle Johnson made history yesterday when she became the first female superintendent of the Air Force Academy in Colorado. In her remarks at the Aug. 12 change of command ceremony, Johnson said the academy must continue to adapt to keep up with current developments and challenges. “I have a lot of listening to do, a lot of learning to do, to understand how things are now to better help us go forward together,” said Johnson, the academy’s 19th superintendent. “I also know we’ll inevitably face challenges. It won’t be easy, but we can find meaning in adversity, and…

With just three months on the job, you might not know a whole lot about new Chief of Staff of the Air Force Gen. Mark Welsh yet, but what you should know by now is that he has a way with words and that he is a proud airman who believes in the power of, well, air power. We here at Air Force Times are looking forward to collecting notebooks of our favorite catchphrases from the chief and hope you are, too.  The big two so far harken to the signature way that Chief Welsh, an F-16 pilot, likes to…
